Practitioners Symposium: Development in UK, Africa and the Caribbean

March 31, 2008

Qver and over academic research identifies lack of committment on the ground as an important block to the successful long term effects of much work in international development.

This event is aimed people with practical experience who are interested in developing ground up approaches to international development. In short, it’s for people who are committed to helping people to help themselves.

Getting ‘buy-in’ on the ground requires more than adjusting management systems, it requires functional ways to encourage communities on the ground to intiate their own learning, and the encouragement of local engagement.

It will have a three pronged focus:

  • Recognise International Development Practitioners who are working to transform the more traditional NGO leadership and management models in community development;
  • Explore strategic and operational priorities for UK African and Caribbean Churches with UK Government, EU and United Nations International Development policies;
  • Assess the role of International Development as an instrument for translating education into skills for employability and social enterprise development.
